ANONYMIZED FIELD CASE

Dense DAS investigation of a dam seepage anomaly

A completed field trial in southern China evaluated whether surface-wave imaging could identify mechanically weakened zones associated with observed seepage.

01

Monitoring question

Can dense vibration sensing reveal the spatial pathway and mechanical signature of seepage inside an embankment?

02

Field method

Three fiber survey lines at the crest, mid-slope and toe; ten hours of ambient noise; 500 Hz acquisition, 4 m gauge length and 0.4 m channel spacing.

03

Analysis

Ambient-noise cross-correlation, frequency–Bessel dispersion imaging and a zero-offset profile provided independent views of wave-speed change.

04

Finding

A continuous shallow low-velocity zone aligned closely with the field-observed seepage location, supporting the interpretation of a weakened seepage pathway.
